The Week That Was
4:51 PM
A big week last week filled with figurines and 3D cakes. There was a beach scene for 2 lads having a joint 60th Birthday celebration in Port Douglas so a topless sunbathing babe on a beach was very fitting.
The last "cab off the rank" was a Holden Ute cake. Yep, delivered both cakes on Friday then off I went to Sydney that evening to do this fabulous cake at Planet Cake. I like a challenge and this was no exception. Putting the cake together was the easy part - the devil was in the detail! And boy do we have some detail going here. The contours, the lines, the bubbled windshield, the wheel flares......and the list goes on! Interesting that since making this cake I now view at cars in a very different light.
Then there was Ferguson the Bear. Ferguson is a much loved Teddy Bear who is always in tow with his owner Lily. Where Lily goes, Ferguson goes and help us all if the two should part! Lily's cake was a replica of her beloved bear and throughout the process of making him I couldn't stop thinking about Lily's reaction when the time came to cut up Ferguson! In the end, I decided to let her mother worry about that.

I've been planning on getting my website sorted for months and naturally I like to support local businesses. But after weeks and many hours of researching web designers, I just couldn't find something that really grabbed me. I wanted something different, creatively quirky yet classy and it frustrated me that I couldn't find what I wanted. I decided to broaden my search and found a web designer that ticked all the boxes.
After months of collaboration the Cake This website was finally launched last night. I cannot thank Paule from Pauledesign enough for bringing my ideas to life. Even though we live in different time zones, Paule was super quick with responding to everything and I did wonder on a few occasions if she actually slept at all? She seemingly got into my head, understood what I was looking for and there were many times when we came up with the same or very similar ideas. With incredible creativity and expertise, Paule created a website that I absolutely love. So thank you Paule, it was fantastic working with you!

We've had some
particularly cool nights this week and the days are averaging around 24
degrees which is such a nice change. The biggest bonus is there has been
almost zero humidity but inevitably this joy will be shorted lived and
already I'm dreading the thought of the warmer months.
We're also edging closer to the completion of the Cake This website and I'm hoping that it'll go live by the end of next week. I've been collaborating with a fantastic web designer and I won't let the cat out of the bag just yet - so I'll leave it at that.
Speaking of cats....Hello Kitty! It was such a nice change to do a whole cake in buttercream instead of fondant, although having not piped intensively for a while, I think I've come down with RPI.....repetitive piping injury!!

The Avengers cake was completed without a hitch despite a day of an unexpected increase in humidity (yes, the exact day I had to cover the cake with fondant!). The figurine was slightly harder to do, particularly trying to get Spider Man's muscles just right. I think his upper torso was sound but boy does he needs to work on those legs....they look more like mine!!! LOL.

Being a chocoholic from way back (seriously, just ask my dentist!) I'm not a great fan of Buttercream but when it comes to little kids birthday cakes, I think it's slightly more kinder on their bellies. In this instance I love using Swiss meringue buttercream because it's actually tastes better than your average buttercream. Epicurious.com has a Swiss Meringue Buttercream Recipe which is similar to the one I use and is worth trying out. Do read the reviews on this page because it has some relevant comments about the recipe.
So I've just finished ganaching a 4 year old's birthday cake (White chocolate mud with Swiss meringue buttercream filling) which will be decorated in an Avengers theme. Just wait till they cut the cake - they'll get a big surprise!! I think there's something quietly sexy about a well ganached cake!

Welcome to my world....the world of Cake This! Up early this morning for a cupcake order. A month or so back, I made a red velvet teal and ivory wedding cake.
Well, the now newly wed wife asked if I could make her husband some love themed cupcakes just because she loves him!! Awwww so sweet! Anyways their wedding cake topper was 2 teal doves so I thought it would be nice to have that as a running theme long with teal and red hearts!
